romantic (rō-măn'tĭk)

adj.
  1. Of, relating to, or characteristic of romance.
  2. Given to thoughts or feelings of romance. See synonyms at sentimental.
  3. Displaying, expressive of, or conducive to love: a romantic atmosphere.
  4. Imaginative but impractical; visionary: romantic notions.
  5. Not based on fact; imaginary or fictitious: His memoirs were criticized as a romantic view of the past.
n.
  1. A romantic person.
  2. often Romantic A follower or adherent of romanticism.

I was just watching an episode of Nip Tuck… I tend to dip in and out of the series, but every time I catch an episode I’m amazed at it’s ability to capture… what? Maybe just the human condition. Tonight, though, was an episode for the romantics.

Someone asked me a while ago what I meant when I said I was a romantic. I answered that any response I could give would be too simplistic, but afterwards I thought I may have meant the opposite… that any answer I could give would be too complex. There’s a conundrum for you.

I find the whole subject of love quite fascinating. On the one hand, I like what a lot of the evolutionists have to say. But, if I were one, I’d believe that love was just an endocrinal process to ensure procreation, and the continuation of the species. But, as an almost-atheist, I’m no creationist either. I’ve decided that it’s best if I don’t try to label myself – I don’t let others do it so I won’t do it either

If I hadn’t just been watching television, I would have told you that a friend of mine sent me a joke today, and it really tickled my sense of humour. It was definitely my kind of joke.

A man walked into a dentist's office and said, "Can you help me? I think I'm a moth."

The dentist said, "You don't need a dentist. You need a psychiatrist."

"Yes, I know," the man said.

The dentist asked, "So then why did you come in here?"

The man replied, "The light was on.”

It's funny you mention labels.

The women I work with call me "Troy" for what they say is my attitude towards women sometimes. It never really hit me until I caught one of them calling me it. I was a little taken back.

But then I remembered my favorite line from nip/tuck ( Inever miss a show), "When you see a woman's cum face you can see into her soul."

I guess I am a little bit like Troy.

I've never watched Nip/Tuck.

You are a hopeless romantic WDKY. That's a good thing I think.

Nice joke. Took me two times reading it..I'm such a slow dork. But the 2nd time it made me chuckle.

i've never considered myself a romantic maybe cause i've always thought that's what men expect us to be and i don't like to be as im expected to...but i do love being in love and as u can see on my blog i love talking about all the aspects of love, relationships, broken hearts and all that. i love poetry and a beautiful sunset in the arms of my love...so yeah i suppose im a down to earth romantic....lol

KOW - are you sure they didn't mean Helen of Troy? Actually, there's a lot of truth in some cliches, I always think...

DN - thanks for the research! I haven't made 35 years yet, though, and it's beginning to look unlikely :-(

Kimmy, you're right of course, but you seem to understand me rather well anyway. And I'll take it as a comopliment. Yes, the joke still had me grinning when I read it again this morning.)

Goose - thanks. And Nip Tuck is about the Beautiful People, of course...

Em, thank you and yes - all is well. I appreciate you asking :-)

J - yes. And no. I guess it's as complex as you want it to be.

Paula - the funny thing is, I often wonder whether women truly understand the meaning of romance. What do you think, really?

ahh. I'm a romantic idealist.
This is, of course, the worst kind...

I *love* Nip Tuck. I try to watch it each week on Sky but every single episode is brilliant. Julian McMahon's character is my favourite. I don't fancy him though!

I think romance comes from the willingness to explore, to discover, to accept - who someone else is. We need more romantics.

It could be Helen of Troy and I wouldn't be against that.

I wonder if plants, leaves, oceans, the sun and the moon romance?

I am a hopeless romantic....I can't help it.
I love the joke about the moth. Have a great weekend.

I happen to love nip/tuck on all levels. I think the only label that has been attached to me is being complicated or complex. I like to think I'm a relationship kind of person but I am gun shy about all of it. I feel like yelling at people half the time so they will back off and let me end things one at a time. ((my gfs keep telling me to go out when I'd rather be totally "free" before I get to that point in my life ~ dating))

Complex and flexible. I don't know.

*sigh*

Sometimes your words and actions make you seem like you're too good to be true. Romantic but not suffocating... And good in the sack. :-) hehe

I'm there with ya. I'm a hopeless romantic. In fact, I almost think romance is better than love (if that makes any sense) and romance is definitely better than sex (not that I don't love sex...) Romance is definitely "all that". Albeit, unsustainable....

P.S. Left you something on my blog....in the spirit of romance and all....

Anonymous said...

Mez - actually, it's the best kind...

NML - bet you do ;-)

NWC, that's a nice definition. Want to join me?

KOW... I bet you wouldn't. You'd look great in an armoured skirt.

Lee Ann - you too. It WAS a great joke.

Ruthie - I know where you're coming from. Don't be fooled though - if I was too good to be true I doubt I'd be single :-(

Hammy - Are you? I strenuously dispute that it's not sustainable though. And thank you, very much x

I think there's a bit of the romantic in all of us.
Some part of us that craves something deeper, something more meaningful.

The one thing I cannot abide is the thought of a hopeless romantic however. The idea that this need will never be fulfilled, never be satisfied, is objectionable to the romantic at heart (like myself). I'd rather prefer a hopeful romantic.

There is hope after all.
Isn't there?

Anonymous said...

Of course there is, Tricia. Every day's a new day, isn't it? And you're right... "hopeful romantic" has a nice ring to it. Off to bed now, but have a lovely weekend...

I just realized, on re-reading the comments, that hamrose said she is an hopeless romantic. I feel silly now. I wasn't referring to that, just sayin'...
I swear I'm not a twit.

Hammy, you are a lovely hopeless romantic and I hope you find all the romance your heart can hold. Your blog is adorable, as are you.

Sweet dreams wdky.

The spacing of course, got all messed in the cut/paste. (as opposed to nip/tuck)... I meant
2. A mysterious or fascinating quality or appeal, as of something adventurous, heroic, or strangely beautiful: “These fine old guns often have a romance clinging to them” (Richard Jeffries).

:)
Ignore the example. You have a romance clinging to YOU. :P

I like NWC's definition, I copied and pasted it and now, NWC, if you're reading this - you're going to end up in my frames of quotes as well!!

Anonymous said...

That's a good joke.

Tricia, Hammy is a lot tougher than she looks. She knows Big Lou.

DN - understood, thanks :-)

Cat, it deserves a place there, I agree. Tha's both of us on your wall now!

Blue - thanks. I STILL love it.
